چکیده

With the explosion of proteomics and protein engineering, modern medicine and life science has taken a strong foothold in bench-scale laboratories, both academic and industrial. A vital component of benchscale development of protein-based technologies is purification. Engineered proteins often undergo a stage of the purification process termed ultrafiltration separation. This involves the separation of the protein of interest from their non-proteinaceous solvent components such as salts (e.g. NaCl) and small molecule denaturants (e.g. DTT, imidazole, urea). This is most commonly accomplished by way of ultrafiltration membrane exchange against a concentration gradient of solutes.

Separation of Carboxylic Acids from Aqueous Solutions using Hollow Fiber Membrane Contactors

Separation of formic, acetic, and propionic acids from the aqueous stream using membrane solvent extraction has been studied using three different membrane contactors made of polysulfone (PS), polyethersulfone (PES), and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) using two different solvents; including ethyl acetate (EA) and diisopropyl ether (DIPE). The efciency of the membrane and e...

A MEMS Device Capable of Measuring Near-Field Thermal Radiation between Membranes

For sensors constructed by freestanding membranes, when the gap between a freestanding membrane and the substrate or between membranes is at micron scale, the effects of near-field radiative heat transfer on the sensors' thermal performance should be considered during sensor design. The radiative heat flux is transferred from a membrane to a plane or from a membrane to a membrane. In the curren...

Continuum Electromechanical Modeling of Protein-Membrane Interaction

A continuum electromechanical model is proposed to describe the membrane curvature induced by electrostatic interactions in a solvated protein-membrane system. The model couples the macroscopic strain energy of membrane and the electrostatic solvation energy of the system, and equilibrium membrane deformation is obtained by minimizing the electro-elastic energy functional with respect to the di...

Dynamic and Static Pull-in instability of electrostatically actuated nano/micro membranes under the effects of Casimir force and squeezed film damping

In the current study, the effects of Casimir force and squeeze film damping on pull-in instability and dynamic behavior of electrostatically actuated nano and micro electromechanical systems are investigated separately. Linear elastic membrane theory is used to model the static and dynamic behavior of the system for strip, annular and disk geometries. Squeeze film damping is modeled using nonli...

Experimental Study on Performance of Modified Hybrid Liquid Membrane Process for Removal of Cadmium from Wastewater

Liquid membrane processes have attracted many interests in recent years for removal of heavy metals such as cadmium from industrial wastewaters. In this study, a modified hybrid liquid membrane system is introduced. The setup is worked by applying the water-insoluble dioctyl phthalate as the organic solvent. N-octanol and tetra butyl ammonium bromide are added to the organic phase to increase t...
